2/59 Lime kiln at approx 12m south-west
- of Golden Gear and Kennel Cottages
GV II
Lime kiln. Probably C18, but a lime kiln is recorded here in the reign of Henry
VIII. Shale rubble walls, slightly battered with partly dressed granite quoins,
brick vaults and kiln lining.
Square-on-plan with vaulted tapered working area recessed at either side (south-west
and north east). Round kiln shaft with conical base.
The working bays (for firing and emptying the kiln) are now obscured by C20 lean-tos
but the whole structure is very complete with an embattled parapet surrounding the
upper working area for loading the kiln.
This is one of the best examples of a C18 lime kiln in Cornwall. The lime was much
used locally on the land for neutralizing the very acid soils.
