Description

SW 74 SE PERRANARWORTHAL

3/314 Park View and Valentine Cottage,
including 2 outbuildings and
well head at rear (north)

GV II

2 houses forming terrace. Early C19. Painted rubble walls and some cob at
rear, slate sills, shallow brick arches or timber lintels. Original
grouted scantle slate roofs throughout, double span roof on left plus
single-storey gable ended wings to rear and single-storey lean-to on right. Grouted brick chimneys over gable ends and cross walls. Cast iron ogee
gutters.
Plan originally an identical pair of mirror image plan single-cell cottages
with pair of entrances at centre leading probably to the stairs on either
side of the thin party wall. Each cottage extended by 1 room at either end;
at right-hand end with new entrance to left of extension and both extended
to rear. Left-hand cottage with 2-storey 2-room service area, and further extended by single-storey projecting service wings at either side to rear.
Right-hand cottage with 1-room lean-to at rear right, otherwise blind cob
wall. 2 storeys. Overall 4-window south front of central original pair of cottages and 1-window fronts of early C19 additions left and right. Left-
hand house has ornate cast iron porch later glazed to original doorway,
right. Except for narrow single-light window to ground floor left, windows
are original 16-pane hornless sashes. Right had house has later 4-pane
horned sashes; original doorway is now window, ground floor, left, ie.
almost adjoining door wall of left-hand house. Present doorway is to left
of right-hand extension with keystones to arches. Brick porch with cornice.
4-panel door later top-glazed. Rear is also in almost original condition
with original doors and windows, mostly hornless sashes with glazing bars.
Interior not inspected but said to be little altered in the C20.
Outbuilding at rear: Circa early C19. Grouted rubble walls scantle slate
roof with gable ends and lean-to at left of front. Wooden launder.
L-shaped plan of main rectangular room with 1-room lean-to at front left
(south side). Single storey. South front with doorway only on right.
Further doorway to right-hand side of lean-to. Ledged doors.
Interior not inspected.
Well head: Circa early C19. Granite steps to square granite base with iron framing over supporting cylindrical wooden windlass with cranked iron
handle. Now operated by electrical pump.
Outbuilding at rear right: Circa early C19. grouted rubble walls. Felted
roof with gable ends. Single cell. Single storey. Doorway at south gable
end and small window at north gable end.
Interior not inspected.
this whole group, houses, outbuildings and well is virtually complete and unaltered since the C19. In this part of Cornwall there are very few
unspoiled examples of this type of C19 building.
