Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8564SW ABBEYGATE STREET
639-1/14/140 (South side)
18/12/89 Nos.33 AND 34

GV II

2 shops, each with former living accommodation above. Early
C16 front range; possible C15 wing to rear of No.34.
Timber-framed and rendered; jettied along front; old
plaintiled roof; late C16 inserted brick ridge stack with a
plain shaft of Tudor brick.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; cellars. 2 window range: late
C19 4-paned sashes to first storey. C20 boarding to parapet;
late C19 dormers: No.33 with mid C20 casement windows, No.34
with a late C19 6-paned sash window. A late C19 cornice to the
jetty with panelled soffit and ornate console brackets. C20
shop fronts with recessed doorways, the front to No.34
inserted in 1989. Mid C19 4-panelled door and 12 to 16-pane
sashes to rear.
INTERIOR: cellar below No.33 with stone lining and massive
flat, plain joists. The ground storey has exposed studs, a
chamfered main beam and plain, flat joists. A rear beam has
empty mortices for a former partition and behind it a main
post which is arch-braced to a surviving section of mid rail,
indicating that an open-sided passage formerly ran along the
back of the building. This accounts for the exceptional width
of the upper floor, almost 8m. No.34 has its ground storey
timbers and ceiling joists hidden by 1989 alterations.
The first storey has heavy close studding and tension braces
along the west gable wall; evidence for moulded window
mullions along the front, and a plain lintel to the open
fireplace of the inserted stack. The side purlin roof has
unusually wide arched wind braces. The altered rear wing
retains the joist ends of a former jetty, some first storey
studding and a coupled rafter roof.
