Shop, formerly with living accommodation. Late C15/early C16
with C19 and C20 alterations. Timber-framed, with comb
pargeting to C20 render; slates to front roof, tiles to rear
range.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and cellar to front range, 2 storeys and
cellar to rear; on a corner site. Early C19 front to Abbeygate
Street with a moulded eaves cornice. On the top storey, 2
small-paned sash windows with segmental heads and keystones;
on the first storey 2 similar windows with shouldered stuccoed
architraves; one window on each storey is on the curve of the
corner. The ground storey of the front range was originally
jettied along the front and side, and the joist ends are
exposed above the C20 shop fascia. The Angel Lane frontage is
in 3 sections with slightly differing roof-lines, the 2 outer
jettied, the central part with a flush front. On the upper
storey a casement window in each of the jettied sections and 2
sash windows with a single vertical bar to lights in the
centre. On the ground storey, 2 doors and one small-paned sash
window; a late C20 small-paned canted bay window below the
jetty at the north end.
INTERIOR: cellar modernised, and used for storage of stock.
Some timbering is exposed along its east wall, and during
alterations in 1989 some medieval fragments were exposed,
including brick vaulting and a limestone doorway near the
Abbeygate Street frontage. From the top of the cellar steps
part of the ground storey ceiling of the south jettied section
can be seen, with plain heavy flat joists. The roof over this
part is a C20 replacement. Over the central section there are
the remains of a clasped purlin roof, and over the north jetty
a crown-post roof, with a plain square crown-post braced only
to the collar-purlin. No other features uncovered inside. The
range fronting on Abbeygate Street was raised in the C19.
