Coal store. Circa early 1850s. Built for the Redruth and Chasewater Railway.
Killas rubble with some granite quoins some of which are reused railway sleepers.
Irregular compound reducing in width towards west. Straight north west, south west
and north east walls with polygonal wall to south. South west wall adjoins
embankment. North east wall has large external battered stone pier to carry railway
line which originally ran on trestles for the length of the compound to the
embankment. North west wall, parallel to former track, has 5 external buttresses,
and north east wall has 2 buttresses, originally to support lateral thrust of 8
storage bays within. To south corner is former office with round-on-plan wall within
yard. Office has doorway and 3 windows. To east corner is wide entrance now blocked
with rubble walling.
This was the most important of the railway's coalyards and was used to store coal and
other supplies for the local mines.
