ST GERMANS CHURCH STREET, (north side), SX 35 NE St Germans 5/92 St Germans Church of England School and the Gardener's Cottage with attached walls GV II

St Germans Church of England School, with attached gardener's cottage; formerly a pair of houses for the head gardener and the foreman gardener; walls attached to left of the school. Mid C19 with few later alterations. Sandstone rubble with limestone dressings. Slate roofs with gable ends; partly slurried slate roofs, with white terracotta chimney pots to stacks. Plan: The school is to left, in 2 parallel ranges, with the entrance at the left side. The central cottage is to right, of one room plan, and the end cottage to right is of double depth plan, with central entrance and principal room to front right and left, with gable end stacks. Wall attached to left of the school. School 2 storeys, with a central plain double doorway leading to an internal yard. Three 16-pane sashes at first floor with stone voussoirs. The left side of the school has external granite stair to right, leading to a C20 door in the rear range at first floor level. 4-pane sash at first floor to right. The gable end of the rear range has 4-centred arched doorway to the cellar, paired 8-pane sashes at first floor and single ventilator above. Central cottage Slightly recessed, with central brick axial stack; two 16-pane sashes at ground and first floor to front with stone voussoirs. The doorway to this cottage is to the rear, facing the Port Eliot garden. Cottage to right 2 storeys and 3 windows, symmetrical front, all 16-pane sashes with stone voussoirs, central plain door with glazed panels. Right side slate-hung at upper level. Walls in rubble with stone rubble coping, extending about 70 metres and about 3 metres high; running along Church Road and ramped down at intervals.
