Description

MAMHEAD
SX 97 NW

8/301 Basket Lodge
11.11.52

II

Lodge to Mamhead House (now Dawlish College). "Said to have been designed by Salvin"
(old list description) and presumably contemporary with Mamhead House, designed 1828-
1833 for Sir R.W. Newman Bart. C20 alterations and additions. Stone or brick,
colourwashed and rendered and retaining its original external wall treatment on the
front elevation only ; cast plasterwork imitating woven basketwork ; tiled roof,
gabled at ends ; axial stack with rendered shaft.
Plan: Small single depth 2 room plan to the original block with a central entrance,
said to have been altered internally. A large C20 single-storey addition to the
rear, C20 glazed conservatory added to the front.
Exterior: Single-storey and attic. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central C20 front
door flanked by 3-light C20 timber casements. The gable ends each have a gable
window of 3 stepped lights. The basketwork plaster on the front is unusual and
compares with the treatment of the verandah at Dawlish Lodge (q.v.). The very deep
verges on the returns are supported by extraordinary carved brackets to left and
right and in the gable, the brackets in a Renaissance style (one missing on the left
return) representing grotesques with blind justice at the apex on the right turn
and a carved bear at the apex on the left return.
Interior: not inspected ; said to be modernized.
