Model estate houses, 1864, 1888, and 1901 on datestones. Stone
plaque at Nos 44/46 reads "18 CH 64/ THESE COTTAGES WERE ERECTED
TO THE MEMORY OF/CAROLINE HANBURY/THE WIFE OF ROBERT HANBURY
JUNIOR M P/WHO DIED OCT 24TH 1863/FOR ME TO LIVE AS CHRIST/AND TO
DIE IS GAIN". Stone plaque at Nos 32/34 reads "ESH/&/AH/1888",
and at Nos 50/52 "ESH & AH/1901". Fronts and ends in red brick,
varying in shade for each period, with yellow brick band at upper
floor level and steep slate sill to each window. Rear walls
uniformly in yellow stock brick with segmental arches. Red tiled
roofs. Double-pile plan with separate parallel pitched roofs for
front and rear parts. Handed pairs of houses entered from a
recessed porch with a single opening from the street. Oldest
group in the middle Nos 40 - 48 with two and a half pairs of
houses. No 48 on the left is separated by a passage with an
arched entrance. Second group Nos 32 - 38 are 2 pairs adjacent
and uphill to the right. Third group Nos 50 - 52 are a single
pair at the left hand, adjoining No 48. The design of the 1864
group is repeated in the later groups. 2-storeys. Chamfered
plinth stepped down slope, symmetrical front to early pair with
central entrance under pointed flat arch with chamfered and
shouldered jambs. One flat pointed arched window on each floor
of each house, and twin flat pointed gables. Small paned 2-light
casement windows with top light above transome. An unusually
urban housing type built for the Hanbury family of Poles.
Important to the character of the village street.
