GV II
An attached town house, dating from the C18.
MATERIALS: the house is constructed from rubble stone, with stone dressings, and a slate roof.
PLAN: the building is almost square on plan, with a small outshut to the centre rear.
EXTERIOR: the house is of two storeys and three bays, a symmetrical front with a central entrance doorway, and hipped roof to the north. The doorway is flanked by eight-over-eight hornless sash windows, set in dressed openings with cambered heads, stucco architraves and keyblocks. The doorway has pilasters flanking a door of six fielded panels, above which is a narrow, rectangular fanlight in an entablature with a moulded cornice. The eaves are moulded, above which the hipped roof is slate, with rectangular, brick end stacks and a similar stack to the rear. The northern return has irregular fenestration including some timber casements.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: Bromyard is a small market town that was first recorded in circa 840. No. 33 Church Street is situated on one of the principal thoroughfares in the town, adjoining the church with the market square. It continues south into Sherford Street, and together they were known as Verterus Vicus in the late C13 and recorded as Shurford Streate in 1575. This central area of the town to the south of the church and around the market place appears to have been fully built up by the early C17, though some of the plots have been re-developed since that time. No. 33 Church Street dates from the C18.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: 33 Church Street is designated at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural interest: the building is a good C18 townhouse with a classical doorframe and good detailing to the window surrounds
* Intactness: the house survives well and appears little altered
* Group value: with the numerous other listed buildings in Church Street
