Description

TM 07 SW WATTISFIELD POTTERY HILL

3/97 Forge Cottage

II

Cottage. C16, with older core. Timber-framed and rendered; asbestos slates.
1½ storeys; now 3-cell form. An internal chimney-stack has a plain rebuilt
red brick shaft on a base of Tudor brick with a blank recessed panel. 2 old
3-light casement windows with a single horizontal bar to lights and one
single-light window. Plank door, within an open rustic timber porch; another
plain C20 door on left. A single-storey lean-to on the, right gable end. The
left side of the cottage has been raised: in the gable end a lower wallplate
is visible, and the slope of an earlier roof is outlined in pargetting.
Inside, most framing is covered, but the position of substantial timbers can
be seen under wallpaper. There is no chimney-bay, and an upper tie-beam has
been cut through for access. The end bay on the right has rough exposed
timbering and is a later addition; a change of floor levels in the room above.
