TQ 2881 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER WIGMORE STREET W1 56/46 (north side) 14.3.66 Nos 36 (Wigmore Hall) and Nos 38 and 40 G.V. II Showroom and flats with concert hall to rear. 1904 by T E Colcutt. Buff terracotta and slate roof. Free northern Renaissance and classical motifs. ; Four storeys with dormered and gabled attic in steep pitched roof. Original large plate glass shop display window to centre of ground floor flanked by pedimented Portland stone doorways with rusticated surrounds and blocked columns, large spaced voussoirs to segmental arches. The Wigmore Hall entrance to right with iron and glass canopy. Three main bays to upper floors divided by pilaster strips, the centre with a pair of arcaded first floor windows, a triple group of cross mullioned second floor windows and a triple group of arcaded third floor windows, Venetian grouped attic window and oculus in finialed gable above parapet. Flanking bays have 2 storey canted oriels and a pair of arcaded windows to third floor, the parapet above swept to point and Venetian dormers behind. All windows have leaded casements. Wigmore Hall entrance gives onto vaulted marble clad passage leading to barrel vaulted foyer with marble staircase rising over rusticated archway to bracketed balustraded balcony landing giving into upper level of hall. The hall is barrel vaulted and main feature is the apse with mosaic by Gerald Moira flanked by shallow relief framed frieze probably by Anning Bell. Ground and first floors of No 38 and 40 have showrooms with Baroque cum neo Georgian decoration, panelling, pilasters, but including in first floor showroom a reset Rococo chimney piece and pedimented overmantel of carved wood flanked by pilasters.
