3 houses, now offices, with area railings to No.17 (right). 1791, restored 1988, area railings late C19. By William Hargrave. No.17 for JT Vincent, gentleman. Red brick, stone details, cast-iron area railings, roof not visible. 3 storeys, 3 houses, of 3, 5 and 3 bays, in one composition. Central block, (No.18): central doorway with three-quarter Tuscan columns, fanlight and pediment; sashes with glazing bars, slightly cambered wedge lintels, stone sills in round-arched recesses forming an arcade with impost moulding to ground floor; 6 giant Ionic pilasters rise above 1st-floor band, blind balustrade below 1st-floor windows. Restored entablature, cornice and pediment with semicircular window in the tympanum. Flanking blocks have arcaded ground floor as centre, restored doorcases, plate-glass sashes, 2nd-floor window lintels raised and parapets restored. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to No.17: standards with ball finials, bars with scrolls and acorn finials. The size and style is similar to Nos 5-7 at the east end of Park Place (qv). William Hargrave built houses on land leased from the Wilson estate; he leased them on to merchants and gentlemen leaving the congested medieval town centre.
