GV I

A stretch of wall along the east side of Angel Hill and to the
north west of the precincts of the former Abbey of St Edmund
and to the north of the Abbey Gate (qv). C12; raised in C14
after the rising of 1327. Flint, much of it coursed, divided
into wide bays by worn shallow ashlar-faced buttresses. The
bay nearest to the Abbey Gate has an admixture of stone blocks
and a small blocked rectangular window-opening and is thought
to be part of the earlier gate, destroyed by the townspeople
in 1327.
Scheduled Ancient Monument.
