BUCKLAND C.P. REIGATE ROAD TQ 25SW 4/60 Church of St Mary 11/11/66 The Virgin GV II

Church. C14 and C15, effectively remodelled and rebuilt in 1860 by Henry Woodyer. Rough-coursed Bargate and ironstone rubble with some larger irregular blocks and ashlared dressings. Wood shingled timber framed bellcote and spire, plain tiled roofs. Nave with chancel to east, vestry to north, porch to south and small gabled bellcote to west end with broach spire and crucifix finial. One 3-light arcaded opening on North, South and West faces of bellcote with jamb shafts and blocked centre lights flanked by louvred outer lights. Offset diagonal buttresses to west end, lancet window above in deep coved reveal. 4-light "Decorated" style window below with "rose" of 4-lights over. Offset buttressing to north and south on nave, with "Decorated" style windows in chamfered surrounds and under hood mouldings. Two similar windows on south side of chancel. Curious window to east end with 3 cusped lights below and central, foiled roundel over with flower-like petal tracery in deep, double-coved surround and hood mould with blocked-in end stops. Single storey vestry to north at right angles with C20 bay on end. Gabled porch to south with cusped bargeboards and open traceried arcades over boarded sides on stone plinth walling. Fleur-de-lys and foliate carving in spandrels of 4-centre arch, stop-chamfered purlins to roof. Deeply moulded and chamfered surround to south door. Interior:- Braced collar roofs over nave and chancel, tiled floors below. Large bellcage to west end with chamfered posts and braces. Arched bracing to lower stages with render-infilled doubled, St Andrews cross type bracing. Elegant C19 spiral staircase with broach stops to chamfered posts and trefoil pierced frieze covering tread ends, tucked in the corner. Double moulded order to wide chancel arch on half-pier responds with moulded caps. Square panelled roof to chancel with billeted wall plates, diamond panels with fleur-de-lys and shield boss decorations to easternmost bay. C19 fittings. Pierced, cusped and arcaded altar rails and choir stalls with shallow fan-vaulted canopies. Panelled pulpit with crocketed ogee-arch panels. Solid font of multicoloured marbles inlaid in chalk, red, green and white, of octagonal plan with trefoil and quatrefoil panels on sides. Thick octagonal stem with broach stops forming square plinth, elaborate, crocketed and pierced octagonal plan spired font cover. Monuments:- two C18 wall tablets. Stained glass - some windows by Hardman. Fragments of C14 glass in south-west (St Peter) and north-east (St Paul) of nave under renewed glass canopies. V.C.H. (1967 Edn) Vol. III p.175.
