Sutton monument to east of path 10m

Headstone. Probably c1780-1820. Commemorates John Sutton and
other members of the Sutton family (dates of death not given).
Sandstone. Short finely-dressed slab with shouldered top,
scribed margin, a sunk oval panel in the head with
skull-and-crossbones, and inscriptions: Death how terrible is
thy / approach (the last word with flourishes to left and
right), JOHN SUTTON junior AEt 42 / ALICE SUTTON - AEt 17 /
WM. SUTTON Senior AEt 88 / BETTY SUTTON - AEt 95. The lower
portion of the slab, now buried, may have further
inscriptions.
Forms group with Church of St Cuthbert (qv), with Ball
monument (qv) and with Meadow monument (qv).
