Two houses, now shops and offices with attached railings.
c1818-1830 with later additions and alterations, including
mid-C20 ground floor shop fronts. Pinkish-brown brick with
painted stucco facade and concealed roof, cast-iron railings
and balcony.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, 5 first-floor windows arranged 1-3-1, of
which outer bays project from first floor.
Ground floor has remains of horizontal rustication. From first
floor through second floor are Tuscan pilasters, frieze,
cornice.
First floor: 8-pane French windows with divided overlights in
plain reveals, those to outer bays within recessed,
cambered-arched surrounds. Second-floor band. Second and third
floors have 2/2 sashes with sidelights in plain reveals, those
to second floor are taller and with sills. Cornice, low
parapet, copings.
Ground floor: pair of central entrances share Doric porch with
3 pairs of columns on plinths, single engaged pilasters to
sides; frieze. 3 steps to part-glazed, panelled doors.
Otherwise plate-glass shop fronts. Stack to right. First floor
has continuous balcony with circle-and-anthemion motif
balustrade.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: gate and railings to porch have bars and
dog bars with lozenge and scroll finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: originally known as Lillington Lane, it was
re-named Union Row c1809. It was known as Union Parade by
1814, with most building activity to the lower section
c1810-1818, and to the upper section, east side from
1824-1840. Built as houses, hotels and lodging-houses, by 1850
most had become shops and was known as the Parade by 1860.
