Churchyard wall and lychgate to
Church of St Mark

GV II

Churchyard wall and lychgate. 1879 by George Gilbert Scott
junior with C20 lychgate. Reddish-brown brick with ashlar
copings and timber lychgate with plain-tile roof and with
cast-iron gate to east.
Wall: U-shaped on plan, approximately 1.25 metres high.
Stepped and chamfered plinth with double-chamfered copings
with upper roll-moulding, octagonal piers to entrance to west
and to angles. Lychgate: double plank gates with column
clusters supporting arched braces and tie beams, and with
gothic tracery to sides, hipped roof. Inscribed 'ENTER INTO
HIS GATES WITH THANKSGIVING' and 'In memory of Lieut. Gen. Sir
John Lindesay Keir K.G.B. churchwarden of/ this church erected
by his friends in church and the Royal Artillery and Town'.
Gate to east has decorative lancets and slender bars. Wall
abuts church to left end.
A significant streetscape feature, forming part of the setting
for Church of St Mark (qv).
