Water mill and miller's house, converted to 2 cottages in C19,
now house. Believed to be c1620, with extensive additions mid
C19 and alterations for Mr Galton. Red brick front facade with
reddish-brown C17 brick to right and timber-framing with
reddish brick nogging to rear, and lias stone plinth at right,
and plain-tile roof.
EXTERIOR: one-and-a-half storeys, 3 upper stage windows with
range to rear. Front facade: 2 off-centre entrances have
part-glazed doors under timber porches with bargeboards and
finials. 2-and 3-light casement windows with wooden mullions
under dripmoulds. Upper stage has 3 2-light casements under
dripmoulds to full dormers. Further multi-pane casement to
right of right porch.
Central ridge stack, pair of diamond ridge stacks to right,
and rear stack. Right gable end has deep stone plinth.
Rear: central upper part has square panels of timber-framing
and diagonal braces.
INTERIOR: has inglenook fireplace with deeply-chamfered
bressumer beam to central room; this room has an exposed brick
and stone wall with a deep chamfer thought to have been a
chute; this room is reputed to have been an open cart area
originally. Wall plate and tie-beams visible to upper stage,
roof has collar beam and 2 tiers of purlins with rafters.
In roof space the original right gable end wall has small
panels of square timber-framing.
HISTORY: in 1778 the mill was part of the Archer Estate (of
Umberslade Hall, Tanworth-in-Arden (qv)) and recorded as being
in tolerably good repair.
