Description

WELLS

ST5445 THE LIBERTY
662-1/7/316 (South side)
13/09/72 Old Deanery boundary wall on S side
at return to New Street

GV II

Part of boundary wall to the Old Deanery, Cathedral Green(qv).
C15, with additions and restorations. Rubble, some copings.
The wall, which also returns to the S, behind the garage
facing New Street, varies from approx 3.25 to 4m in height,
and extends approx 60m in length from its junction with the
return at New Street to a return to the C20 canons' houses
(not included) in The Liberty. There is a slight change in
direction towards the W end, but the wall is otherwise
continuous.
It is a very important townscape element at the junction of
New Street with The Liberty, and part of what was formerly a
complete enclosure to the large site between The Liberty and
Cathedral Green occupied by the Old Deanery.
