Public house. Late C18 or early C19; altered, and internal
remodelling in progress at time of inspection (June 1992). Red
brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings, slate roof.
Double-depth double-fronted plan with back extension.
Georgian.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and three windows, symmetrical; with a
chamfered plinth, rusticated long-and-short quoins (painted),
plain frieze and very prominent eaves cornice with blocking
course. The ground floor has a large round-headed doorway with
stepped surround, set-in Tuscan columns, panelled door and
fanlight with altered glazing; and large tripartite sashed
windows with square-cut stone mullions. The 1st floor has
similar tripartite windows above these, and a 12-pane sash in
the centre; the 2nd floor has similar 12-pane sashes. All
these windows have raised sills and wedge lintels. Both side
walls have sashed windows with glazing bars, and the left side
has a doorway near the front with plate-glass panel engraved
"DOG AND PARTRIDGE HOTEL". Right-hand rear corner (towards
churchyard) has quoins and eaves cornice. Rear wing of
handmade brick. Modern extension to rear of building is not of
special interest. INTERIOR altered.
Forms group with Church of All Saints (qv), with No. 22 (qv) to
right of entrance to churchyard, and with No. 28 (Head Post
Office (qv)) to left.
