PLYMOUTH

SX4855 ST LAWRENCE ROAD, Plymouth
740-1/43/415 (North side)
Plymouth High School for Girls
(part)

GV II

School. 1877 datestone. Plymouth limestone brought to course
and with freestone dressings; steep dry slate roofs, with
parapet to front roof; stone axial stacks with octagonal
shafts and moulded cornices. Tudor Gothic style. Deep overall
L-shaped plan.
EXTERIOR: symmetrical 3-bay front with central recessed bay.
Plinth, lintel strings and 1st-floor sill strings. Central bay
has moulded corbelled oriel on buttress flanked by pair of
4-centred arched doorways with hoodmoulds and original
overlights and wide glazed and panelled doors with coloured
leaded glass. The canted oriel has very steep polygonal roof
behind a parapet; 3-light mullioned centre and single
sidelights and a panelled apron with shields; single light
window to either side of oriel. Each flanking bay has 3-light
mullioned window over pair of transomed 2-light windows with
buttress between.
Left-hand return bay has coped gable over stepped 4-light
window over pair of 3-light windows. The return is then built
forward as a symmetrical front with central gabled bay with
pair of 2-light transomed windows and similar pairs of windows
to flanking bays.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
A good example of its type, strongly articulated and with some
good detail to the front facing North Hill.
