Row of 5 houses now shops and bank with flats over, National Westminster Bank occupies a corner site, No.1 Cambray Place and Nos 118 and 120 High Street. c1818-1820, shown on Post Office Map of 1820, with c1850-70 ground-floor shop fronts to Nos 2 and 3, and early C20 ground floor to bank (Nos 118 and 120). Brick with stucco facades, ashlar to ground floor of bank, and concealed slate roofs; brick party-wall stacks. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, 8 first-floor windows (3:3:2). Stucco detailing includes: windows at right and to right return have tooled surrounds with Greek Revival pediments and surmounting acroteria. Parapet ramped upwards at right. 6/6 sashes to first and second floors, taller to first floor; 3/3 sashes to third floor where original. Entrances: No.1 has late C20 door to right and to centre of glazed shop front; No.2 has c1970s door to right within shop front with barley-twist pilasters; No.3 has a 6-panel door to right with blocked fanlight within similar shop front. Entrance to No.118 to angle, double 6-panel doors with overlight in architrave with two 3/4 engaged Ionic columns, forming part of bank front which breaks forward with Ionic pilasters between windows. Right return has 5 first-floor windows. 1/1 sashes with aprons; frieze and modillion cornice. Crowning low parapet and copings. INTERIOR: 1983 List notes that No.1 retains the upper flights of its original staircase, Nos 2 and 3 retain original staircases and ceiling cornices and door surrounds above ground floor. HISTORICAL NOTE: Dr Thomas Christie (1773-1829), pupil of Dr Jenner, vaccination pioneer and Physician Extraordinary to George IV lived at No.1.
