Terrace of 19 houses and attached railings. Nos 1-14 built 1834-8; Nos 15-19 built 1847-9. Stucco over brick (painted except to No.19), slate roofs and brick party-wall stacks; iron first-floor balconies and railings. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, Nos 9, 10 and 11 (centre range) have 4 storeys; 38 first-floor windows (2 per house). Most have range to rear. The central 5 houses (Nos 8-12) break forward, and the centre 3 break forward again. Stucco detailing includes: horizontal rustication to ground floor, drawn into voussoirs over windows; to Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 the horizontal rustication defines a wide, shallow, cambered window recess. Continuous first-floor sill band surmounted by Tuscan pilasters through first and second floors to breakforwards, continuous frieze and cornice; blocking course except to centre 5 houses (Nos 8-12) of which the outer 2 have balustrades, otherwise frieze, cornice and blocking course above third floor. First floor has tall 6/6 sashes (except No.19 has C20 French windows), all in tooled architraves. Second floor has mainly 3/6, 6/6, 8/8 sashes. Third floor has 6/6 sashes. Basements have 6/6, 8/8 and tripartite 8/8 between 2/2 sashes. Ground floor has 6/6 with margin-light sashes to shallow recesses where original; otherwise sashes with cambered heads, mainly 6/6 with 2/2 side-lights. Entrances: flights of roll-edged steps to Nos 1, 3, 8 and 9 at left, otherwise at right: flights of roll-edged steps to mainly 4-panel doors with sidelights under overlights and cambered-arched lights, mainly with decorative glazing bars, Nos 3, 4 and 5 have web motif and Nos 5 and 6 have batwing and circle motif. Rear: many 6/6, 6/6 with margin-lights, and 8/8 sashes. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: spearhead and lancet railings to sides of steps throughout. Forecourt lancet railings to No.10 with bars and dog-bars; and to No.17 a balustrade with rod-and-circle motif. First-floor balconies, continuous to each house have scrolled lozenge motif (after LN Cottingham, plate 16); Nos 17 and 19 have balusters with scroll borders cast by Falkirk Iron Company; no balustrade to No.18. No.14 has ground-floor window box with scroll motif. Some boot-scrapers. At rear a

window-guard to No.4. HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area (the Pittville Estate) undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. Clarence Square was laid out in the late 1820s, building began in 1832. The Square was named after the Duke of Clarence, who became William IV in 1830. No.19 was inhabited by Charles Sturt, the Australian explorer (1863-69).
