Terrace of 5 houses (now includes rest home, No.46 and guest house, No.50) and attached railings. 1835-6. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks; cast- and wrought-iron railings, balconies and verandah. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, 15 first-floor window range (3 per house), end houses break forward. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication forming bands between windows to ground floor drawn into voussoirs above openings and forming elliptical arches recesses above windows; first-floor sill band; architrave, frieze and cornice with blocking course. 6/6 sashes almost throughout, taller to ground floor; basement has 8/8 sashes. Right entrances except No.50 has left entrance: flights of steps (roll-edged where original) to recessed 4-panel doors (some part-glazed) with side-lights and overlights with diamond glazing-bars. Rear retains 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor balconies (1 to each house) have quatrefoil design; verandah to No.49 has similar motif to stanchions. Railings to sides of steps have flattened spearheads. HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42 (the Pittville Estate), the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes.
