(Formerly listed as Nos.6-24 (Even) and St Alban's Public House)

II

Terrace of ten shops. Dated WS 1890, with mid-late C20 ground-floor shop fronts. Probably by WH Knight, this terrace extends in design from Nos 2 and 4 (qv).

EXTERIOR: two storeys and attic, 13+1 (to right angle) first-floor windows. Ashlar over brick with polished granite columns and mansard slate roof with tall brick party-wall stacks. French Renaissance style, particularly in the bracketed pediments over the cross-mullioned first-floor windows and the pedimented ashlar dormers. Bracketed sill string and cornice with swagged corbels to dividing piers on first floor. The arcaded ground floor treatment survives on the corner and on right hand return (former St Alban's PH). Rounded corner with square oriel over with richly carved transoms panels and shaped pediments to dormer over. The adjacent shop to left has Corinthian columns at entrance, with angled oriel over, dated panels in transoms and shaped gable to dormer.

INTERIOR: not inspected.

HISTORICAL NOTE: The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa (on the site of the Queen's Hotel (qv)).

Forms a group with Nos 2 and 4 (Midland Bank) Promenade (qv).
