Office building. Dated 1889. By Alfred Waterhouse for
Prudential Assurance Company. Brick and terracotta with slate
roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, including high ground storey with
inserted mezzanine floor. 3-window range to Bradshawgate,
oriel turret across angle, and 2 window return to Nelson
Square. Ground floor openings to Bradshawgate, including
central entrance, renewed in original openings with drop ended
hoodmoulds. Nelson Square entrance renewed.
Full-height canted oriel window forms angle turret with
terracotta panels below mullioned and transomed first-floor
windows. Oriel window over entrance in Bradshawgate elevation.
All first-floor windows are mullioned and transomed, with
arched upper lights. Arched lights to mullioned windows of
second storey, with blind arcading forming frieze below them.
Arched lights in upper level of turret, and coped gable over
right-hand windows in Nelson Square elevation. End wall
stacks.
