Railings, plinth and piers bordering the Bathwick Hill side of Raby Gardens. c1820, altered 1990s. Low limestone ashlar plinth supports spearhead cast iron railings with two top rails enclosing circle between each rail in seven panels approx. 18m long and two panels approx. 8m long that flank C20 gate to acute east corner. Former gate to centre of Bathwick Hill side square with diagonal bars dividing two concentric circles into four quadrants, in each quadrant an anthemion motif, scrolls to outer corners. Tall panelled piers have cornices and tall capitals with tall semicircular headed Soanian anthemion panel to each facet.
HISTORY: These railings, probably locally produced, protected the private gardens located at the bottom of Bathwick Hill, opposite Raby Place. They take their name from the County Durham seat of the Earls of Darlington, heirs to the Bathwick Estate. The enclosure of this former field with this elegant perimeter in the Grecian taste served to raise the tone of the development. The railings were conserved recently under James Elliot¿s direction.
