(consec) (Formerly Listed as:

High Pavement fronting Eye Infirmary
and Nos. 3-23 (consec) Belvedere)

GV II

High pavement and vaults below. Probably c1775.
Limestone, mostly square cut rubble; Pennant flags. Pavement reaches its highest point outside No.17. Topped by plain wrought iron railing and has various openings to vaults beneath as well as several ramps from pavement level down to road.
HISTORY: The pavement was probably constructed at the same time as the houses behind, but it is possible that it was altered in the course of early C19 highway improvements when the gradient of the road was reduced. A good example of this type of structure, with which Bath is well provided: they served the private function of storage space, and the civic function of a secure foot passage.
