Description

BLOOMFIELD ROAD
(North West side)
Terrace balustrades and staircases at No.172 Westfield House

GV
II

Terrace retaining walls with balustrades and staircases. Mid C18 altered C20.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar. Retaining wall running parallel with and approx 20m north-west from rear front of Westfield House (qv), carries fine balustrade with coping, in four+five+three panels, with square panelled piers, carried down as plain articulating piers to lower panels. Opposite central axis of house is flight of twelve plain stone steps with ramped balustrades stopped, and slightly flared out at bottom, to similar square piers, large stone urns to top piers. Near right hand end further opening with steps and landings leading to late C20 house (not included) built adjacent to retaining wall at lower level. Layout on this side of house appears to have been modified, but detailing of balustrades suggests c1740 date. An important adjunct to the main house.
