Detached villa. Late C18.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double-pitched slate roof with moulded stacks to coped gable ends.
PLAN: Double depth plan flanked by attached single storey pavilions, hipped roof to that to right.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement, symmetrical front. Late C19 plate glass windows. Modillion cornice entablature and parapet, chamfered rustication up to ground floor platband, steps up to six-panel door with narrow overlight under prostyle porch with restrained acanthus band to capitals which support dentil cornice. left hand pavilion has semicircular arched recess, that to right has double doors. Open work decorative area railings.
INTERIOR: Inspected 1975. Extremely ornate niches, two semi-circular and one flat-headed with exquisite floral detailing.
HISTORY: Montague House, residence of William Montague Esq. was sold in August 1794. Chaning-Pearce who accumulated one of the finest fossil collections of C19 (now in British Museum) built a museum here for his collection between 1845 and his untimely death in 1847 at the age of 36.
