HEDGEMEAD PARK
Gates and piers at entrance to Hedgemead Park
GV
II
Gates and piers. Circa 1889. Possibly designed by TB Silcock.
MATERIALS: Cast iron gates, piers and railings, ashlar plinth. The double gates have long/short railings rising through two horizontal rails below centre, two horizontal rails to tops have short infills between, alternate vertical railings have fleur-de-lys heads. Centre of each gate elaborate vertical scrolled panels with urn finials, sides similar half scrolls. Square section piers have moulded bases, panelled shafts, wide cornices, roll-edged block tops supporting flattened spherical balls with spike to each of four sides and smaller ball finial. Adjacent plinth (qv) has substantial bull-nosed stone coping and steps down in sections, to left of each level stage are vertical panels similar to those at the centre of each gate.
HISTORY: Hedgemead Park was laid out by TB Silcock in 1889. Opened as public garden because landslips had made ground unsuitable for building.
