Public House. Late C18 (OS says pre-1776) with C19 & C20 alterations.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, painted to front, slate roof.
PLAN: Tall building with steep mansard roof, and central carriage way to small internal courtyard flanked by lower wings.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement. Three windows, all plain sashes, two-light casement dormers above single small centre and paired outer sashes at first and second floors, with larger paired sashes with wooden mullion at ground floor, and central wide square carriage arch flanked with pilasters, with pair of high plank gates with spikes to top rail. Basement grille to right. Platband above ground floor, cavetto string above first floor, eaves roof, stack forward, right, and front and rear to narrow coped gable, left. At first floor, between bays one and two painted Royal Arms in high relief. In carriageway is early four-panel door to right, second glazed door, and to left glazed door and large window. Rear roof sweeps down over centre section to two plain sash above carriageway.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Until the cutting-through of Charlotte Street in the C19, the Kings Arms stood on the important carriage route from Bath to Bristol, and was a correspondingly prestigious inn.
