Description

Late 19th century range of buildings; all brick, with contrasting moulded tiled string courses and detailing.

Office: single storey, south facing 3-bay range fronting gabled kiln extension. Centre door flanked by canted bay windows, linked by deep slated canopy forming verandah; further verandah extends at SW (serving former wages office) with pro-roof supported by cast-iron columns on short retaining wall, with curved brackets. Piended platform roof with decorative cast-iron balustrade fronting 1st floor of south gable of kiln extension with 1st floor tripartite framed by deep cornice and giant pilasters supporting segmental headed pediment and framing decorative tiled plaques. Multi-pane glazing in upper sashes and in tripartite.

Kiln: square brick kiln with piended slated roof terminating in tall pagoda louvred vent, with weathervane. 2 further corrugated asbestos clad square slim towers, also with pagoda shaped piended roofs with slender finials.

Bonded store: extending from west of kiln is a long double gabled, single storey and loft bonded warehouse range. Symmetrical 12-bay elevations to north and south, each elevation defined by giant brick pilasters; segmental headed ground floor and small louvred loft windows, the latter linked by continuous cillband. Similar detailing to rear (north) elevation.

Slate roofs with tiled ridge.

Statement of Interest

Sited outwith the Burgh of Fort William. Parish boundary defined by Nevis river, which flows past the distillery. Warehouse range to east of office kiln complex and forecourt, together with Manager's house dated 1953, not included in listing.
