J J Stevenson of London, architect, with H Walker of
Fairlie. Dated 1887. Single storey, set on slope, with
basement raised at west. Scottish Jacobean details.
Essentially cruciform-plan, with crow-stepped gables, but
eastern re-entrant angles filled with low flat-roofed
rooms. Polygonal masonry at basement, bullfaced and
snecked ashlar above: polished dressings. West elevation:
inner gable has central stepped buttress supporting corbelled
pedimented and finialed birdcage bellcote 2 tall pedimented
windows. Basement door and ground floor bipartite to left of
gable, decorative datestone to right. Continuous string
over basement, wide eaves band above string.
Bipartite below relieving arches in north and south gables
and tall stack over south east and north east angles. East
elevation has several openings; long outbuilding extends
from projecting inner bay. Windows all have small panes and
are mostly in roll-moulded architraves. Crow-stepped gables.
Slate roofs.
Playground enclosed by rubble-built walls; square ashlar
gatepiers to west with pyramidal caps, decorative
wrought-iron gates and railings at steps.
Opened 22.11.1887.
