Description

Later 17th century (between 1671 and 1680). Monumental 21ft high, 4-stage, Baroque faceted sundial. 1st stage with 2-tier octagonal base giving way to reduced plinth with ropework moulding; 2nd stage with 4 rampant lions each holding dial in fore-paws, (S dial elliptic, N round, W rectangular, E square), and flanking barley twist columns; corniced canopy supported by top of 2nd stage and reducing to neck of 3rd stage with multi-faceted globe; 4th stage with carved scroll surmounted by Earl's coronet.

Statement of Interest

Property of Strathmore Estates (Holding) Ltd. Erected by the 3rd Earl at three degrees west of the Greenwich Meridian. A sundial at Fingask Castle, Rait, allegedly moved from Holyrood Palace, follows a similar form.
