Description

Possibly 14th or 15th century; raised and crenellated probably late 18th century. Circular rubble structure, approximately 14ft high, roofless, with crenellated parapet (see Notes). Row of oval openings with ashlar margins close to top. Doorway with chamfered arrises and (possibly) evidence of relieving arch to NE; blinded window to E.

Statement of Interest

Property of Strathmore Estates (Holding) Ltd. Together with the

'East Tower' (listed separately), this tower formed part of the former court wall removed when a picturesque landscape was introduced. The Gladiator Gate now known as the North Lodge Gate was the inner gate forming part of the court wall. The parapet detail is strikingly similar to that added to the Main Gate in 1774, and in what MacGibbon & Ross describe as 'carpenter?s Gothic' appearing on a 1772 engraving of the castle by Pennant.
