Wm. Atkinson of London 1807, main part of house demolished
to ground floor level and converted to terrace c.1949,
alterations by Sir Basil Spence. Tudor gothic, part brown,
part red, droved ashlar front, remainder red rubble,
2-storey with gatehouse feature and chapel (completed
internally and apse added, good arcade, T.S. Robertson,
1866.) Rubble-built clock tower to rear.
Interior; (old west) staircase with plaster vault and
lantern light, one room of old main block with new bay
window added.
Note in Neale's view the main surviving part of the house
(the former W. wing) existed no higher than 1st floor
level as a screen wall although the pend and its adjoining
foot-gate existed as now. The present arrangements with
chapel are said to have been intended from first but the
upper parts were not completed until about 1839-40, while
the chapel was not completed till 1865-6.
