Description

2-storey hotel formed from 3 houses which comprises terrace of
various dates from mid to late 18th century. White painted
harling with black painted droved and plain ashlar dressings
and base course.
W (STREET) ELEVATION:
MID 18TH CENTURY PROPERTY: at centre; 3 wide symmetrical
bays with central doorway; strip fanlight and 2-leaf boarded
doors. Windows in flanking bays probably enlarged and original
windows under eaves to each bay at 1st floor. "Tweeddale Arms
Hotel" painted in band course between floors.
LATE 18TH CENTURY PROPERTY TO RIGHT: comprised of 5 taller
bays to right; door off-centre to left with later stone
mullioned tripartite flanking to left and 2 single windows to
right; 5 windows regularly spaced at 1st floor.
LATER 18TH CENTURY PROPERTY TO LEFT: comprised of 2 irregular
bays to left. Wide depressed carriage arch to outer left
with keystone; doorway and window to right; 2 enlarged windows
under eaves at 1st floor.
Variety of projections and additions to rears. Small-pane
glazing pattern to sash and case windows. Grey slates. Squared
rubble and harled mutual gable stacks and brick ridge stack.
Pub sign hung from post and beam bridging pavement, with
post set in large gabled base of ashlar coped rubble.

Statement of Interest

The Tweeddale Arms Inn was in existence by 1854, though may

not at this date have included all 3 properties.
