Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 7-bay tenement block with shopfronts at ground. Painted ashlar. Eaves course; cornice. Architraves to 1st floor windows.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: modern shopfronts at ground floor; glazed timber doors; letterbox fanlights; shop windows; regular fenestration at 1st floor (bipartite windows to centre and outer bays).

Plate glass timber sash and case windows at 1st floor. Grey slate roof; brick stacks; circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen 1998.

B Group with 3, 5-9 (Odd Nos), 11 and 13, 15-19 (Odd Nos), 21-25 (Odd Nos), 27 and 29, 31-39 (Odd Nos), 41 and 43, 45-51 (Odd Nos), 53-57 (Odd Nos), 71, 4, 6-10 (Even Nos), 12, 18-22 (Even Nos), 30-38 (Even Nos), 40 and 42, 44 and 46, and 48 Newmarket Street. The street was developed along the lines of a lane in the 19th century, to give access to a new Butter Market on its N side. Listed for group value in completing streetscape.
