Description

Tall rubble sandstone wall encloses Balgownie House garden to S and E; swept at NE. Harling remains in places; ashlar coping stones. Square-plan, corniced, ashlar entrance gatepiers to E. Truncated pyramidal coping stone. Remains of light fitting to S gatepost. Metal gates; timber pedestrian door to S. Wall continues along S bordering roadside. Pair of chamfered, square-plan gatepiers to W; pyramidal coping stone; replacement timber gates. Wall continues northwards along Slate Loan. Cobbled area by W gates.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with Balgownie House, Boathouse and Garden, Building. Balgownie House is said to have been built from the stones of an earlier Balgownie, which was situated to the NW of the present building, by Balgownie Mains. It is probable that the rear of Balgownie House is an earlier house which was extended with a 6-bay elevation in circa 1840. For historical note, an hospital, founded in 1639 by George Bruce of Carnock for the maintenance of women, was sited to the SW of Balgownie House, within the boundary walls and was removed circa 1765.
