Description

Mid 19th century, with post 1879 addition. 2-storey, 3-bay villa. Squared and snecked rubble; raised ashlar dressings. Base and eaves courses.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: columned porch at centre, with dentilled cornice and balustrated parapet above (as 1st floor balcony); panelled door and plate glass fanlight. Window above at 1st floor. Full-height canted window in bay to right, with cornice and blocking course above eaves level. Bipartite windows at ground and 1st floor in full-height advanced panel in bay to left, with cornice and blocking course above eaves line.

W (PARK ROAD) ELEVATION: bipartite stair window at centre; 2 small windows flanking at ground. Window at ground and 1st floor in bay to right. Blind window at ground and 1st floor in bay to left.

N ELEVATION: 2-bay. Window at ground and 1st floor in full-height advanced panel to left. Window at ground and 1st floor to right.

S ELEVATION: later, lower piended wing adjoined, recessed to E and W: window at ground and bipartite window at 1st floor to E elevation; flush panelled door to left and bipartite window at 1st floor to W; 4 bays to S, with door to right of centre, flanked by windows, N and jettied 1st floor with window.

6-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows. Stained glass in stair window. Piend and platform roof. 2 flat-roofed dormer windows with small-pane glazing pattern to E pitch. Shouldered and parapeted wallhead stacks at centre to N and S.

INTERIOR: encaustic tiled vestibule floor; stained glass border to vestibule screen. Plasterwork ceilings, cornices and roses.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: saddleback coped rubble wall; stop-chamfered square piers, flat-pyramidal-capped, with "Stonefield House" inscribed on right pier. Lean-to outbuilding on wall to SW, with coal hatch to street. Overthrow to pedestrian gate. Former stable, with hayloft and modern garage door, to N.

Statement of Interest

This villa was built after 1853. The wing to the S was built after Eskbank received its water supply in 1879.
