Description

1866. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay, T-plan villa. Squared, snecked and stugged cream ashlar with polished dressings. Chamfered arrises.

S ELEVATION: symmetrical. Projecting gabled centre bay; deep-set panelled door with rectangular plate glass fanlight; cornice with scrolled strapwork brackets and blocking course. Blank returns with corbel course to 1st floor. Windows to 1st floor and gablehead. Ball finial. Flanking bays with projecting bipartite window with cornice and blocking course at ground; window to 1st floor. Left bay with segmental headed bipartite timber dormer.

W ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to right with sunken basement window, window to left at 1st floor and narrow window in gablehead; shouldered apex stack. Later rendered lean-to porch in re-entrant angle with bipartite window; narrow window above; windows to both floors to left. Elaborate tripartite timber dormer; stop-chamfered arrises, moulded eaves; swept piended roof with fishscale tiles, decorative buckle-quoin

flashing and exotic wrought-iron weathervane finial. Further later

lean-to to left.

N ELEVATION: broad gable at centre with later casement window to left at ground and lean-to right with window; window in gablehead; apex stack. Bay set back to right with door and window to lean-to porch at ground.

E ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to left with windows to right at ground and 1st floor; window in gablehead; shouldered apex stack. Bay to right with windows to both floors. 4-pane timber sash and case windows (8-pane to gableheads). Ashlar coped skews; corbel skwputts; grey slates; corniced ashlar and brick apex stacks, octagonal cans.

BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: truncated tall semicircular-coped ashlar wall to road; battered square gatepiers with base and coved caps. Rubble boundary wall.

Statement of Interest

Built by James and John Crombie, local joiners and builders, and sold on in 1868. There is a range of 3 brick garages to the immediate NW of the building. The picturesque piended dormer is of particular interest.
