This memorial cross in the Canongate kirkyard is dedicated to the memory of all the soldiers who died in Edinburgh castle between 1692 and 1880. In the 12th century, David I granted the canons of Holyrood Abbey "leave to establish a burgh between that church and my burgh" (i.e. the Castle). This explains why Edinburgh Castle belongs to the parish of Canongate, despite its physical distance from the former burgh.
