Adam Smith's grave

Uploader's Comments

The grave of one of the leading figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. Smith founded the science of economics with his groundbreaking study, 'The Wealth of Nations', in which he advocated the free market economy in place of the mercantilist protectionism practised by 18th-century nation states. He also argued that the pursuit of individual self-interest worked for the common good. A flagstone over the grave carries the inscription:
The property that every man has in his own labour, as it is the original foundation of all other property, so it is the most sacred and inviolable.
