Description

Patrick Wilson, 1837. 3-storey 2-bay former school with Jacobean detailing; single storey extension to rear. Coursed ashlar (coursed rubble to sides and rear). String course between ground and 1st floors. Chamfered surrounds to windows.

W (RAMSAY LANE) ELEVATION: shaped gable with apex chimney and oculus. Corniced chimney stalks to corners. Slightly advanced 3-storey bay to centre with 5-light window to ground and 1st floors (modern glazing); raised panel above with inscription (TOLBOOTH PARISH SCHOOLS MDCCCXXXVII).

E (REAR) ELEVATION: 2-bay gabled rear of main block and pitch-roofed single storey extension with finialled ogee-roofed ventilatoron diaper patterned base.

Statement of Interest

Built as Toolbooth Parish School in 1837. Incorporated into Dr Guthrie's Original Ragged or Industrial School (1 Ramsay Lane, separately listed) after 1850, as the Girls' and Infants' section. Sydney Mitchell's Dean of Guild plans of 1899 show the building incorporated into the New College complex as classrooms, at the time of the building of the Rainy Hall.
