Description

Circa 1885. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan villa with service wing attached. Squared and snecked rubble; coursed stugged ashlar with poklished ashlar dressings to S (entrance) elevation. Base course, dividing and eaves cornices; raised long and short quoins; segmental-arched windows at 1st floor; roll-moulded arrises to window surrounds.

S (ENTRANCE) elevation: central round-arched pilaster-flanked and architraved doorpiece with masque keystone and 2 paterae, fluted consoles bearing cornice, and decorative stone balustrade; 2-leaf panelled door, with glazed upper panels; plate glass fanlight; raised single window at 1st floor above. Full-height canted window in bay to outer left. Advanced tripartite window in bay to outer left. Advanced tgripartite window at ground floor to outer right rising into bipartite window at 1st floor with scroll detail at base.

W ELEVTION: timmber-framed conservatory with iron finial at ground floor to outer right; 2-storey service wing to outer left; 3 single windows at 1st floor.

Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof; lead flashing; moulded eaves guttering; 2 shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks; moulded octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1990.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: low saddlebacked wall to Fountainhall Road, rising to W, with coped pedestrian gateway and paired coped ashlar gatepiers. High coped boundary wall to E, continuing into South Lauder Road.

Statement of Interest

Similar in a number of respects to Nos 55 and 57 Fountainhall Road (listed separately) by John McLachlan.
