Description

F W Doyle-Jones, 1912. Bronze bust of Robert Burns. Pink granite channelled, corniced plinth on a square base with carved swags. Raised carved lettering 'BURNS' to top of shaft and 'BRAW BRAW LADS' to base. Original wrought iron railings to the rear and recent metal railings to the sides.

Statement of Interest

This bust is a notable element of the collection of monuments in Cornmill Square, the principal formal space in Galashiels. This includes the bust of Walter Scott, the Equestrian Statue of a Border Reiver and the Memorial, Clock Tower and Fountain, all by Robert Lorimer (all separately listed).

The bust commemorates the re-writing by Burns of the song 'Braw Lads o' Galla Water'.

Category changed from B to C(S) 2006.
