Description

Mid 19th century. Terraced pair of 2-storey, attic and basement, 3-bay classical houses. Sandstone ashlar to front, squared rubble to rear with render repairs, lined render to side. Band course above basement and ground floor, 1st floor cill course, eaves cornice, blocking course, tablet above centre bays. Raised margins.

S(PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical with entrances to centre. 3-step stone flights oversailing basement leading to consoled, corniced and architraved doorpieces, 2-pane rectangular fanlights, 2-leaf 2-panel doors to right (No 55), 4-panel door to left (No 53) both deep-set. Windows centred above at 1st floor, 2 bays flanking with windows at ground and 1st floor. 2 doors and 1 window in basement to left (No 53), 2 windows and 1 door in basement to right (No 55), canted slate-hung dormer to left and right.

N ELEVATION: broad gabled section to centre in shallow advance; door to centre at ground with additional windows to left and right and glass porch, 2 windows at 1st floor, 2 small windows in gablehead. Single bay wings flanking with window at ground and 1st floors.

E ELEVATION: adjoining 57 John Street.

W ELEVATION: blank gable end.

Timber sash and case windows, 12-pane to No 55 and to rear, plate glass to front of No 53. Grey slate pitched roof, stone skews. Brick gablehead stack to W, 2 ashlar and brick stacks to E, broad brick gablehead stack to N, polygonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS, RAILINGS AND LAMP STANDARD: low coped ashlar wall to front (S) with intact cast-iron railings, gates and balustrades, fleur-de-lys finials. Cast-iron lamp standard at foot of steps between front entrances.
