Description

Mid 19th century. 3-storey and attic, 4-bay symmetrical Classical tenement with shops to ground (currently fire damaged and uninhabited, 2009). Ashlar with raised, moulded architraves; rubble to rear. Cornice to ground, band course, eaves cornice. Central doorway with semi-circular fanlight above. Pair of flat-roofed dormers. Circular stair tower to rear with conical slate roof. Shop fronts with plain pilasters. Later timber fascias.

Grey slates. Some frames remain of 12-pane timber sash and case windows to upper storeys; boarded openings to ground.

Statement of Interest

This tenement is distinguished from the others in the street by its Classical detailing including its moulded architrave windows and band course. The upper storeys at street elevation are little altered and the building as a whole adds significantly to the streetscape of this area. The shops have been somewhat altered, but the round-arched doorway and fanlight remain.

North Methven Street was laid out in the 1790s, however the existing buildings are predominantly from the 19th century. This one does not appear until the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1860.

The building was fire damaged in 2008 and is now empty (2009).

List description updated as part of Perth Burgh resurvey, 2010.
