Description

Earlier 19th century with later additions. 2-storey, symmetrical 3-bay plain classical house with single storey L-plan wing clasping NE angle. Stugged ashlar sandstone with polished and droved ashlar dressings. Base course; band course between ground and first floor; eaves course; channelled quoins to angles and quoin strips to centre bay; raised margins to windows.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced, full-height central bay; advanced corniced doorpiece with Doric columns; deep-set timber panelled door with 2-pane fanlight; window at 1st floor above. Single windows at each floor in flanking bays. Ashlar coped screen wall recessed to outer left with single window.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular, 3-bay. Later brick lean-to porch at ground in bay to centre; stair window above. Non-aligned windows at ground and 1st floor in bay to right. 2 irregularly disposed windows at ground in bay to left; window at 1st floor above. Single storey wing advanced to outer right: 2 boarded doors with letterbox fanlights above in bay to centre; window in bay to right; boarded door with flanking window in left return.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank wall with gablehead stack above single storey, 5-bay wing: bays grouped 2-2-1; pair of boarded doors to right; single window to outer right; pair of windows to left; wallhead stack to outer left.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to principal and rear elevations. Variety of glazing patterns to other elevations. Grey slate roof; skylights to SE; ashlar coped gablehead stacks to NE and SW; ashlar coped skews; cast-iron rainwater goods. Detached modern, harled garage with corrugated pitched roof to NW.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: sandstone rubble with rounded ashlar cope. Square-plan gatepiers with squared ashlar copes.

Statement of Interest

Although it appears on the 1854 OS map, it is not marked as having any specific use. When shown on the 1894 OS map, however, it is marked as being the UP Manse serving what is now Lasswade Parish Church, further down the hill. On the 1971 street layout, it is marked as 'Strathesk Manse'.
